Rasmus Andersson is in the final year of his contract and though he wasn’t traded during the off-season, the expectation remains that the Calgary Flames will move him at some point this season.

Andersson, 28, will see his six-year, $27.3 million contract expire after this season, which will result in him becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The Flames tried trading him last season ahead of the trade deadline to both the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights, but those moves fell through – Andersson wasn’t willing to sign an extension with the Kings, while cap restraints and a package with Vegas did not align.

Of note, the Ottawa Senators expressed interest in Andersson last season, as well, but they are one of the clubs on his six-team no-trade list.

Vegas remains a team Andersson is open to signing an extension with, as are the Dallas Stars, as TFP reported in July.

During Tuesday’s “Insider Trading” segment on TSN, Pierre LeBrun reported “there is a chance” he signs a new deal with Flames, as opposed to being dealt, but added “it’s probably still not the best of the two scenarios.”

“Everyone is an adult in the room. He’s ready to play his best for the Flames. The Flames are happy to have him back (to start the season). In the meantime, neither side wants to totally close the door and maybe having extension talks again at some point this year,” LeBrun said. “But for now, the team has told Andersson is, ‘Hey, let’s start the year. Let’s see how things go here and then maybe we’ll revisit this at some point.’

“I do think Andersson might potentially listen if there was an eight-year offer on the table, but right now I just don’t think the team is ready to go there. We’ll see where this all goes. I think more than likely a trade is still the likeliest option before the March 6 trade deadline.”

In 81 games with the Flames last season, Andersson registered 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points.
