POWER RANKINGS
CHICAGO, IL — It’s the middle of the first week of November, hockey fans, and things in some markets are really, really ugly. One team still hasn’t reached ten points in the standings, and another still has only a single regulation win to show for their start to the season. Is Gavin McKenna that good?
There are some veteran teams around the league that are still trying to find their legs one month into the regular-season. There are some young teams that are seeing their play on the ice exceed expectations early.
All of that gives us a beautiful amount of parity across the NHL.
Let’s jump into our Power Rankings for the first time in November. As always, let us know what we got right and where we’re terribly, horribly wrong.

32. Calgary Flames
Their minus-17 goal differential is the worst in the league and they’re the last team with a single digit in points in the standings.
31. St. Louis Blues
The Blues and Sharks have allowed an NHL-worst 53 goals entering Wednesday. St. Louis is 2-4-2 at home. Things are bad for the Blues.
30. San Jose Sharks
Only one regulation win in 13 starts is not good, even if Macklin Celebrini’s numbers are getting attention. They’re the last team in the league waiting for a second regulation win.
29. Minnesota Wild
Only three teams have a worse goal differential entering Wednesday than Minnesota’s minus-11 mark.
28. Nashville Predators
When getting clowned on “Saturday Night Live” isn’t the worst part of your week, maybe it’s time for some roster consideration?
27. New York Rangers
Someone please explain how the Rangers are 0-5-1 at Madison Square Garden but 6-1-1 on the road? I’ll wait...
26. Chicago Blackhawks
Connor Bedard is off to a marvelous start, but the Blackhawks have dropped the first three of a six-game road trip to open November.
25. Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks host the Blackhawks on Wednesday night with hopes of getting to .500 on home ice.
24. Florida Panthers
The Panthers are 1-5-0 on the road, but 5-1-1 at home. They’ve only won three of their last ten.
23. Boston Bruins
The Bruins have won four straight, but that improves them to just 5-5-0 in their last 10 games.
22. Edmonton Oilers
A 2-5-2 road record is far from what’s expected in Edmonton. Defensively, the Oilers leave a lot to be desired. And they don’t have cap space to change much.
21. Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres have points in nine of their last ten starts, but four of those have been overtime losses.
20. Ottawa Senators
The Sens are under .500 on the road thus far, but have four regulation wins in their first 13 starts.
19. Tampa Bay Lightning
The Lightning are one of a few veteran teams around the league that has yet to find consistency this season.
18. New York Islanders
Matthew Schaefer has been better than advertised this season. He’s a big reason the Isles are exceeding expectations.
17. Washington Capitals
The Caps were outstanding on home ice last year, but they’re under .500 at this point while skating in front of their fans in DC.
16. Los Angeles Kings
The Kings are wandering through their schedule and are still trying to find consistency. Four overtime losses in 14 starts isn’t what they want. They’re 1-3-2 at home.
15. Philadelphia Flyers
Three of the Flyers’ seven wins have needed a shootout. Apparently, there was a reason to get Trevor Zegras we didn’t realize at the time.
14. Toronto Maple Leafs
Still searching for the right mix as they try to fill the void left by Mitch Marner.
13. Columbus Blue Jackets
Five of the Jackets’ seven wins have come in regulation. They’re one of the teams that’s only played 12 games entering Wednesday.
12. Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pens have dropped their last two games but are still in a playoff spot. Will that change their plans on the trade market as the season progresses?
11. Detroit Red Wings
The Yzerplan is starting to show signs, and the Wings are 5-1-0 to start their home slate this season.
10. Dallas Stars
The Stars are only 4-3-3 in their last ten and have a negative goal differential as a team. Both aren’t what we expected at this point in the schedule.
9. Seattle Kraken
Also not expected, the Kraken are off to a terrific start this season while some other teams in the Pacific are trying to figure things out.
8. Carolina Hurricanes
At plus-12, the Canes are tied for the second-best goal differential in the league entering Wednesday’s games.
7. Winnipeg Jets
Winners of seven of their last ten overall, the Jets are 4-1-0 on the road to start this season.
6. New Jersey Devils
The Devils are still undefeated on home ice and have won seven of their last ten starts.
5. Utah Mammoth
Winners of eight in their last ten starts, the Mammoth are squarely in the playoff conversation in a Central Division that has a huge gap between the top four teams and the bottom half.
4. Anaheim Ducks
With Boston, the Ducks’ four-game win streak is the longest in the NHL entering Wednesday.
3. Vegas Golden Knights
The Knights still only have two regulation losses through 12 starts this season.
2. Montreal Canadiens
Comfortably sitting second in the league in point percentage, the Habs are the top team in the Eastern Conference as we sprint into November.
1. Colorado Avalanche
Points in nine of their last ten is slightly deceiving when four of those games have been overtime losses. But the Avs still have only one regulation loss on their record – that’s impressive.
