As Nazem Kadri sits four regular-season games away from 1,000 on his career, trade speculation surrounding the veteran centre has reached its peak.
Still, much like TFP reported on Saturday, a move is not considered imminent, and the Calgary Flames are still trying to determine what direction to take this season.
During Tuesday’s edition of “Insider Trading” on TSN, Darren Dreger echoed TFP’s weekend report and added that a trade, even in the near future, is considered “premature.”
“There is a lot of talk and a lot of speculation driven by the media,” Dreger reported. “The reality is it comes from a place where the Calgary Flames are playing well below expectations and there are other Canadian markets – namely the Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, and maybe the Toronto Maple Leafs – that could absolutely envision a No. 2, experienced centre like Nazem Kadri in their lineup.”
Kadri, 35, has three seasons remaining on his contract after this season and comes with a $7 million cap hit. He also owns a 13-team no-trade list as part of his deal.
Dreger added that “Kadri loves Calgary” and the Flames have not yet decided if “their roster needs reconstruction.”
In 11 games so far this season, Kadri has collected two goals and six assists for eight points.
“There’s tons of interest, don’t get me wrong,” Dreger stated. “But the timing isn’t right yet.”
