The Senators continue to have daily discussions with Claude Giroux’s camp over a new contract and according to the Ottawa Sun, the club remains hopeful a deal can be ironed out before July 1.

In Friday’s “32 Thoughts” column, Elliotte Friedman reported “Giroux and Ottawa were battling over bonus structure” as talks continued.

However, according to Bruce Garrioch, the two sides have not yet even agreed on a base salary figure.

Giroux’s new deal could come in at a base salary in between $3 million and $4 million, with upwards of $2 million in bonuses. The Senators have just over $10.75 million in salary cap space and can fit Giroux’s next deal under their cap structure.

Giroux currently ranks among the players listed on TFP’s Top 40 UFAs List.

Both Giroux and the Senators have expressed their desire to get a deal done, and the expectation among other clubs is that a deal will get finalized, but there is clearly still work to be done.

In 81 games with the Senators this season, Giroux registered 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points.
