As TFP’s David Pagnotta first reported Tuesday morning, the Toronto Maple Leafs and goaltender Anthony Stolarz have started contract negotiations on an extension.

Talks over most of the summer were limited, but sources confirmed to Pagnotta that negotiations are now ongoing.

It is unclear what type of deal Stolarz is looking for – he is in the final year of a two-year, $5 million contract – but Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving is hopeful a deal can be ironed out.

“Anthony has come in and has been terrific,” Treliving told The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun Tuesday evening. “Really, him and (Joseph Woll), you look at any metric you want, I think they were as good a goaltending tandem as there was in the league, and really were a backbone for us.

“We’ve certainly explored some things with Anthony and his representative, and we’d love to find a way to get something done. If there’s something that both sides are comfortable with, we’ll look at it. And we’ve been in those discussions for some time right now. We’ll see what the coming days bring.”

Stolarz, 31, posted a 21-8-3 record with a 2.14 goals-against-average, a .926 save percentage and four shutouts in 34 games with the Leafs last season, the most games he has played in the NHL in his career, to date.
