The Carolina Hurricanes have been among the teams interested in unrestricted free agent forward Michael McLeod, and they now appear to be the frontrunner to sign him.

According to TFP’s David Pagnotta, McLeod is expected to sign a contract with the Hurricanes in the coming weeks.

McLeod is eligible to officially sign an NHL contract as of Oct. 15, as per the NHL, though he may be able to agree to a contract effective Oct. 1.

McLeod, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton and Carter Hart, were each members of Hockey Canada’s 2018 National U-20 Junior Team that had criminal allegations against them and were found not guilty in July.

All five players are eligible to play in NHL games no sooner than Dec. 1, bringing their total time out of the League to nearly two years.

McLeod, 27, registered six goals and 13 assists for 16 points in 35 games with Barys and Omsk of the KHL last season.

In 287 career NHL regular-season games with the Devils, McLeod has accumulated 29 goals and 56 assists for 85 points, and 164 penalty minutes.
