The New Jersey Devils remain in ongoing contract negotiations with goaltender Jacob Markstrom’s representatives on an extension.
Markstrom, 35, is in the final year of a six-year, $36 million contract and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Both sides, however, have expressed a desire to extend their relationship and Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald continues to negotiate a multi-year extension with Markstrom’s camp, led by agent Pat Morris.
A week ago, ESPN and NHL Network’s Kevin Weekes reported the Devils “initial offer was in the $5M per year range” though it is unclear how many years were pitched.
According to league sources, the hope is to secure a deal in the near future, though Markstrom is believed to be looking for a higher AAV.
The Devils have $86.875 million in AAVs attributed to next season’s salary cap, which is projected to hit $104.5 million, a figure that is reportedly increasing due to the NHL’s revenues. Given New Jersey’s cap space, the club has plenty of room to accommodate Markstrom’s next contract, as he and young defenceman Simon Nemec are the club’s main pending free agents next summer.
In 49 games with the Devils last season, Markstrom posted a 26-16-6 record with a 2.50 goals-against-average, a .900 save percentage and four shutouts.
