The Colorado Avalanche would like to get winger Martin Necas locked up to a long-term contract extension, and while discussions with his agent remain fluid, a deal is not yet on the horizon.

Necas, 26, is in the final year of a two-year, $13 million contract and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The Avalanche acquired him in a deal with the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 24 in a move that sent Mikko Rantanen to Carolina.

Avs GM Chris MacFarland acknowledged that he has “chatted with the agent” but reiterated the team’s desire to sign Necas to an extension.

“We’d like to get something done. I think that’s kind of the update,” MacFarland said on Monday.

It is unclear as of the type of AAV Necas is looking for, but a deal worth around $10 million per season could be in the cards if he produces another point-per-game season. Necas registered 83 points in 79 games with the Hurricanes and Avalanche last season.

Contract talks are expected to continue during the regular-season, at least in the first portion, if a deal cannot be reached by the time the new campaign gets underway. Colorado drops the puck on the 2025-26 season tomorrow in Los Angeles.

The Avs have approximately $77.181 million in cap space dedicated to their 2025-26 salary cap, which is projected to hit at least $104 million next season.
