The relationship between the Toronto Maple Leafs and veteran forward David Kampf is coming to an end. How it ends, though, is unclear.

As Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman first reported on “Saturday Headlines” on Hockey Night in Canada over the weekend, the Leafs are trying to find Kampf a new home after he started the season in the AHL.

Despite reports surfacing since suggesting that Kampf may look to terminate his contract in order to find another opportunity elsewhere, the Maple Leafs have been trying to trade him to a better situation.

Kampf, 30, is in the third season of a four-year, $9.6 million contract he signed with Toronto in June 2023.

The Leafs had explored trading him going back to the off-season – he, and forwards Calle Jarnkrok and Nick Robertson were among the players Toronto had been dangling – but GM Brad Treliving was not able to find him a new home at that point.

Trade talks are continuing and the price tag, believed to be a draft pick, may be lowered given these new revelations.

Kampf, according to Friedman, is not expected to return back to the Marlies (Toronto’s AHL affiliate) and the possibility of terminating his contract may prove to be likely if Treliving is unable to find Kampf a new team via trade.
