As the Columbus Blue Jackets flirt with the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, currently sitting 14th with an 8-7-1 record, contending teams are starting to piece together their wish lists for later in the season.

Veterans like Ryan O’Reilly, Brayden Schenn, Justin Faulk and Blake Coleman are already generating interest, and the Blue Jackets have a player several Stanley Cup contenders will have interest in pursuing at some point this season.

During Wednesday’s episode of DFO Rundown Insider Edition, David Pagnotta told host Irfaan Gaffar that Blue Jackets captain Boone Jenner is going to be a prime target for teams looking to bolster their rosters for a Cup run later this season.

Jenner, 32, is in the final year of a four-year, $15 million contract and owns an eight-team no-trade list as part of his deal.

Pagnotta mentioned Jenner last week and reiterated his spotlight on Wednesday, while also mentioning that contract negotiations have not yet begun between the Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell and Jenner’s agent Joseph Resnick.

“He’s a UFA at the end of the season, he’s got a sweetheart of a cap it. Ridiculously great guy in the room, glue kind in a player and that energy force that Stanley Cup teams are going to want come trade deadline,” he said. “If there’s no extension by or after the Olympics, or even sooner, depending on how aggressive some teams want to get and depending on where Columbus is in the standings, there are gonna be a lot of teams that are gonna line up to try to pluck Boone Jenner out of Columbus.”

Teams expressed interest in Jenner last season, but the Blue Jackets told teams they were not interested in exploring a move at that time.

“Jenner is going to command a lot of interest, and you know how supplying demand works, it’s going to be, I suspect, a pretty interesting return if they do go that go in that direction, but there are teams that are looking and wondering,” Pagnotta stated. “He’s going to be a hot commodity if they stay in this position and they don’t start talking contract.”

In 16 games so far this season, Jenner has posted three goals and seven assists for 10 points. In 16 games so far this season, Jenner has posted three goals and seven assists for 10 points.
