The Calgary Flames seem willing to take calls on star centre Nazem Kadri, even though the price tag on the veteran is considered extremely high.
Kadri, 35, is in the fourth season of a seven-year, $49 million contract and owns a 13-team no-trade list as part of his deal.
While a trade is not considered imminent, despite Calgary GM Craig Conroy’s willingness to explore options, one team that is reportedly out of contention is the Carolina Hurricanes.
According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, Carolina is one of the 13 teams on Kadri’s no-trade list.
“Kadri has been linked to multiple teams, but we have to specifically mention the Carolina Hurricanes, who have been in a relentless pursuit for a top player since falling short on Mikko Rantanen and Mitch Marner last season,” Kypreos wrote in his column. “For now, the Hurricanes seem an unlikely destination for Kadri, as they are on his 13-team no-trade list.”
Two teams interested in upgrading their team up the middle, the Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks, are not on Kadri’s no-trade list, Kypreos mentioned.
The Hurricanes are expected to pursue another big-time player this season, something GM Eric Tulsky has acknowledged as a possibility.
“We’re always looking to get better,” Tulsky told The Athletic last week. “We’re going to look at everything that comes up, whether something gets labeled as big-game hunting or sort of more routine moves. That’s a matter of how the media and fans want to see it. But we’re just looking for anything we can find that’ll make our team better. I think every team wants to bring stars if they can. Stars are hard to come by. If we see an opportunity to get a player, a star almost always makes your team better and so it’s always going to be something we’re talking about.”
Kadri, who won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022, plays in his 1,000th NHL regular-season game on Wednesday when the Flames host the Columbus Blue Jackets.
