The Montreal Canadiens have agreed to a five-year contract extension with defenceman Mike Matheson, TFP’s David Pagnotta was first to report.

The deal will pay Matheson $30 million, giving him an average annual salary of $6 million, and includes a full no-movement clause in the first three years of the team, shifting to a 14-team no-trade list in the fourth season and a five-team no-trade list in the final year of the deal.

Matheson, 31, has recorded four goals and 10 assists for 14 points in 22 games with the Canadiens this season. He leads the team in average ice time at 24:50 per game, ranking 10th in the NHL.

In 649 career NHL regular-season games, to date, with the Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Canadiens, Matheson has accumulated 78 goals and 201 assists for 279 points, along with 376 penalty minutes.

Matheson, who is currently playing his fourth season with the Canadiens, was acquired from the Penguins on July 16, 2022.
