The Calgary Flames are still a week or two away from determining what direction they want to take this season with respect to selling off some of their assets or holding the fort and push for the playoffs.
As it stands now, the Flames are second-last in the Western Conference with 19 points and an 8-14-3 record. Teams continue to reach out to Flames GM Craig Conroy, who is nearing a contract extension with the organization, about some of his players, including veteran forward Blake Coleman.
TFP’s David Pagnotta was the first to report late last month that teams have been inquiring about Coleman’s availability.
Coleman, who turns 34 on Friday, has another season remaining on his contract after this season and comes with both a $4.9 million salary cap hit and a 10-team trade list.
In an interview with Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Herald, Coleman acknowledged that he is hearing the noise around him and teammates like Rasmus Andersson and Nazem Kadri.
“You hear it, obviously, but I think that’s just part of the job,” Coleman told Postmedia. “You put yourselves in this kind of situation (with a poor start). There’s really not a name I haven’t heard. Yeah, some get thrown out more than others obviously. Thankfully, I guess, I learned a lesson early in the league that anything can happen on any day. I was in New Jersey and they told me that I was going to be part of the core and the future, and two weeks later I was traded. So if the right offer comes across for anybody...
“I was a young guy with a good contract. I thought I was safe. They were talking about all the old guys and I was the first one out the door, so ... It is what it is. People have a job to do and, honestly, it keeps my family entertained, my parents and all that. I just mute the chat and just go play.”
It is unclear which teams have expressed interest in Coleman, but clubs like the Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators, Utah Mammoth and Devils are some of the teams trying to upgrade their forward corps.
