The New York Rangers may have already set their sights on a new head coach, as reports have surfaced over the belief that they are leaning in the direction of Mike Sullivan.

On April 19, the Rangers fired head coach Peter Laviolette and associate coach Phil Housley, and GM Chris Drury began the search for a new bench boss.

On Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins relieved Sullivan of his duties, even though he has two years remaining on his contract.

As TFP’s David Pagnotta reported last week, the Rangers have been looking for a veteran coach to take over in Manhattan as the club looks to rebound after a disappointing season.

According to Rangers beat reporter Vince Mercogliano of USA Today Sports, the Rangers are “trending toward Mike Sullivan becoming the 38th head coach in franchise history.”

Sullivan spent the last 10 seasons with the Penguins, guiding them to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in his first two seasons in 2016 and 2017. Over 753 regular-season games with Pittsburgh, Sullivan posted a 409-255-89 record, though missed the playoffs the last three seasons.

He also coached the United States at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off and is the head coach for Team USA at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics.
