New Jersey’s season ended sooner than they anticipated, but with injuries to key players this season, including superstar Jack Hughes, getting past the first-round was going to be a tall task.

Losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in five games, the Devils will now shift their focus towards the off-season and prepping for the 2025-26 campaign.

Goaltender Jacob Markstrom will be entering the final year of his contract and is eligible to sign an extension with the club effective July 1, something he appears to be open to exploring.

“If (GM Tom Fitzgerald) is calling, I’m answering,” Markstrom told Devils beat reporter James Nichols.

Markstrom, 35, will be going into the final year of a six-year, $36 million contract he signed with the Calgary Flames, who retained $1.875 million of his contract when they traded him to New Jersey. He is also due a $3.5 million signing bonus payment this summer.

Though it is very early in the process, the Devils are believed to have interest in discussing a multi-year extension with Markstrom and those conversations are expected to pick up well ahead of July 1.

In 49 games with the Devils this season, Markstrom posted a 26-16-6 record with a 2.50 goals-against-average, a .900 save percentage and four shutouts.
