The Dallas Stars have just under $5 million in salary cap space and GM Jim Nill is exploring his options to create additional space and fill some holes on the roster going into the 2025-2026 season.
Numerous reports have indicated star winger Jason Robertson is in play for the Stars, and TFP’s David Pagnotta has confirmed that teams have been inquiring about his potential availability and the Stars have been willing to listen.
Robertson, 25, is entering the final year of a four-year, $31 million contract with Dallas and moving his $7.75 million cap hit would allow Nill to round out the rest of the roster.
However, two sources close to the situation told TFP on Wednesday that there is an internal hesitancy to part with Robertson, who has put up back-to-back 80-point seasons after collecting 109 points in 2022-23.
The Stars, according to Pagnotta, are also taking calls on forward Mason Marchment, who has a $4.5 million cap hit. According to multiple sources, the Stars prefer to move Marchment over Robertson and may also be dangling defenceman Matt Dumba.
Marchment, who turns 30 on June 18, has a 10-team no-trade list and will have some say in where he ends up, if moved.
Nill is expected to pursue a move leading up to the NHL Draft, which takes place in Los Aneles later this month.
Both Nill and captain Jamie Benn, a pending unrestricted free agent, have expressed mutual interest in getting a new contract ironed out and that factors into the club’s desire to create additional cap space.
Marchment tallied 22 goals and 25 assists for 47 points in 62 games with the Stars this season.
