Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes made two bold moves in the 11 days, acquiring defenceman Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders and forward Zack Bolduc from the St. Louis Blues, and it does not sound like he plans on sitting back and relaxing over the rest of the summer.

Hughes and the Habs are believed to be monitoring the trade market, at both ends of the spectrum. Montreal is still looking to bolster its roster, while also taking calls on some of their players who could give the team some extra salary cap breathing space.

The Canadiens are currently over the salary cap, and while they have a $10.5 million cushion if they need to use it by placing Carey Price on LTIR, the club’s preference is to limit the amount of LTIR usage required this season – especially to start the season.

As TFP’s David Pagnotta reported ahead of last month’s NHL Draft, teams inquired about Brendan Gallagher’s availability, even though the Habs are not shopping him.

Gallagher, 33, has two more years remaining on his contract and comes with a $6.5 million cap hit. He also owns a six-team no-trade list as part of modified no-movement clause.

While a trade involving Gallagher appears unlikely, veteran winger Josh Andeson and defenceman Mike Matheson’s names have also been floating around the rumour mill. Anderson has two years left on his contract, while Matheson is now in the final year of his deal.

Anderson, 31, has a $5.5 million cap hit and a five-team no-trade list, while Matheson, also 31, has a $4.875 million cap hit and an eight-team no-trade list.

The Habs are reportedly discussing the possibility of an extension with Matheson, but failing to reach a new agreement may eventually result in a trade.

Meanwhile, Hughes will continue to fish for upgrades and has shown he is not afraid to use his draft and prospect capital to get what he wants.
