The New Jersey Devils have maintained an open line of communication with the agent for goaltender Jacob Markstrom and Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald made it clear over the weekend that he would like to get his netminder locked up to a new contract.

Markstrom, 35, is in the final year of a six-year, $36 million contract and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The two sides have discussed a multi-year extension, with reports suggesting the Devils pitched an offer that came with an AAV in the $5 million range. Markstrom is currently week-to-week battling injury, so talks have been put on temporary hold, but Fitzgerald expects negotiations to resume soon.

In an interview with David Pagnotta and Ryan Paton on “The Hot Stove” on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio on Saturday, Fitzgerald confirmed “there’s no doubt we want to get it done” and reiterated the team’s stance.

“We love Jacob and Amanda, his wife; we want them to be Devils for as long as possible. I know the feeling is mutual,” Fitzgerald said. “His agent and I have had real healthy communications, real healthy talks, different ideas exchanged contractually.

But the fact is he’s 35 and he's going to be 36, and there are different rules for players that are that age and older.”

Markstrom is believed to be looking for more than $5 million per year on his next contract and the two sides will get back to the negotiating table in the near future.

In 49 games with the Devils last season, Markstrom posted a 26-16-6 record with a 2.50 goals-against-average, a .900 save percentage and four shutouts.
