The Vancouver Canucks remain fully engaged in trade talks with other clubs over several of their players, including forward Kiefer Sherwood.
Sherwood, 30, is in the final year of a two-year, $3 million contract and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer – and the Canucks have not engaged in full contract negotiations with his agent, to date.
Canucks GM Patrik Allvin continues to take calls on Sherwood from numerous teams, including the Boston Bruins, Minnesota Wild, Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers, among others.
The price tag is believed to be a first-round draft pick and another asset in exchange for Sherwood, as reported by TFP’s David Pagnotta, and the Canucks are willing to wait to see when a team is willing to pay a premium for him.
Forwards Conor Garland, Teddy Blueger, Drew O’Connor, Lukas Reichel and Evander Kane, and defenceman Derek Forbort are other players the Canucks are listening on. Blueger and Forbort are currently injured.
During Tuesday’s edition of “Insider Trading” on TSN, Pierre LeBrun acknowledged the Canucks are willing to take their time to assess the market on Sherwood before pulling the trigger on a deal.
“Now, Vancouver is not rushing into this, I’m told,” LeBrun said. “They want to get a full picture of what the market looks like. But what will be interesting to me is, are some of these teams who go more serious in these talks willing to sign Sherwood as part of this to make the value greater for Vancouver? We’ll see if that happens or not.”
In 26 games so far this season, Sherwood has registered 12 goals and four assists for 16 points, along with 16 penalty minutes. He is currently second in the NHL in hits with 106.
