Jake Gardiner, defenceman

The Montreal Canadiens had expressed serious interest in defenceman Jake Gardiner, but lost out to the Carolina Hurricanes, who signed him last week to a four-year contract.

Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin confirmed to reporters on Monday that the team was in the mix on Gardiner, but would not get into details. A source close to the situation told TFP the Habs pitched Gardiner a three-year deal.

“We had interest. We made an offer,” Bergevin said. “It’s a two-way street. If you’re interested, the player has to be interested (too). I can’t comment why he didn’t (accept the offer).”

Gardiner signed a deal worth $4.05 million, on average per season – it’s unclear what type of dollars the Habs offered him.

It’s believed the Arizona Coyotes also expressed serious interest in Gardiner.
