The Ottawa Senators are believed to have started, at least internally, putting together a list of potential coaching candidates for next season.

Marc Crawford has taken over as interim head coach this season and will certainly be under consideration for the full-time role next season, though the team may be more inclined to look outside of the organization for a new bench boss.

In his latest “31 Thoughts” column on Sportsnet.ca, Elliotte Friedman suggested veteran coaches like Jacques Martin, Michel Therrien and Alain Vigneault could be among the candidates.

He also lists Brad Shaw and Mike Yeo as those Senators GM Pierre Dorion may look to interview, as well.

According to Friedman, during Ottawa’s last coaching pursuit, they asked the Toronto Maple Leafs for permission to speak with Leafs assistant coach D.J. Smith, “but were denied.” Friedman suggests the Sens could revisit Smith this off-season.
