Mats Zuccarello, right wing

The Dallas Stars have kept in contact with Mats Zuccarello’s camp and talks are expected to pick up later this month, a source close to the situation told TFP on Thursday.

Zuccarello, whom the Stars acquired from the New York Rangers prior to the trade deadline, is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1 .

Stars GM Jim Nill has expressed his desire to sign Zuccarello to a new contract, but is believed to be weighing out his options. If the Stars ink Zuccarello to an extension, the 2020 third-round pick they gave to the Rangers as part of their trade will turn into a 2020 first-round pick.

Zuccarello is coming out of a four-year, $18 million contract and will see his AAV of $4.5 million increase on his next deal.

The Stars have roughly $14.7 million in available salary cap space, but could create extra space of $4.75 million if Martin Hanzal isn’t healthy at the start of the season and placed on LTIR.

In 48 games with the Rangers and Stars this season, Zuccarello registered 12 goals and 28 assists for 40 points. Limited to just two games due to injury, Zuccarello tallied four goals and seven assists for 11 points in 13 playoff games with Dallas.
