Contract talks between the San Jose Sharks and captain Joe Pavelski are ongoing and the veteran forward is hoping the two sides can come to terms on a new deal in the near future.
Pavelski, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent July 1, has spent his entire career with the Sharks and wants that to continue.
“I am still optimistic, we have had a little bit of talks, so hopefully things keep moving forward and go from there,” Pavelski told the San Jose Mercury News. “Things can change in a hurry. The discussions are kind of going on right now and we’ll see how they work out. But definitely optimistic. Definitely love it there and we’ll see where it goes.”
Pavelski, 34, is coming off of a five-year, $30 million contract and will likely see his salary climb well north of $6 million per year on his new deal.
The Sharks have just over $24.7 million in salary cap space. Pavelski, Erik Karlsson, Joe Thornton, Gustav Nyquist and Joonas Donskoi are among the team’s pending UFAs.
