Dion Phaneuf, defenceman

The Los Angeles Kings are believed to be weighing their options with respect to veteran defenceman Dion Phaneuf and if a trade cannot be orchestrated, the team is expected to buy him out.

During the Saturday edition of “Off The Rush” on NHL Network Radio on SiriusXM, TFP Sr. Writer Dennis Bernstein first reported the Kings are expected to buy Phaneuf out this off-season.

Phaneuf, 34, has two-years left on his contract and comes with a $5.25 million salary cap hit – his total cap hit is $7 million, but the Ottawa Senators are paying $1.75 million of that.

In 67 games with the Kings this season, Phaneuf registered just one goal and five assists for six points and 53 penalty minutes.

With the Kings looking to get younger, moving Phaneuf or buying out the remainder of his contract appears to be in the cards, as Bernstein reported.

The NHL’s first buyout period begins 48 hours after the end of the Stanley Cup Final.
