FLYERS SHOPPING FIRST-ROUND PICK
Chuck Fletcher, GM
Philadelphia Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher plans on being very active this month and will be exploring both the trade market and the free agent market.
Fletcher has roughly $33.4 million in available salary cap space, according to CapFriendly.com, and while the Flyers have several restricted free agents to lock up, none will eat an overly-significant chunk of the cap.
“I think we’re going to be very aggressive in the trade and free agent markets in the sense of looking into every possible situation that can help us,” Fletcher told the Flyers website. “The unfortunate part is the vast majority of things you look into don’t work out. . . . So we’re going to be very aggressive in trying to fill the holes we feel we have. I don’t know if I can say we’ll be able to fill all of them.”
One asset the team plans to dangle is their 2019 first-round draft pick.
According to Flyers beat writer Sam Carchidi, Fletcher is “listening to offers” for his first-round selection and would be willing to move it for a proven player who can immediately help his team.
#Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher is listening to trade offers for his first overall pick. He will happily keep it if he doesn’t get what he wants, but “if we can get a good player at the right stage of his career and with some term left on his contract, we’d certainly look at it.”— Sam Carchidi (@BroadStBull) June 1, 2019
“We need help everywhere,” Fletcher said. “We need help on defense, at center and on the wing. And obviously, we need another goaltender, at least, if not two. We have a lot of needs. We’ll be able to plug some of those holes, whether we’re plugging them with players on six-year deals or players on one-year deals as placeholders to buy more time to find the right fit. We’ll certainly have our roster upgraded next year, and hopefully we can find three or four players at 26 years old that we can plug in there for the next 6-7 years. I don’t know if that's likely.”
The Flyers are also believed to be entertaining calls on defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere, who ranks among the Top 30 on the TFP Off-Season Trade Watch List.
Gostisbehere, 26, has four-years left on his contract and comes with a $4.5 million salary cap hit.
“We are aggressively looking in the trade market now,” Fletcher said. “At the right time, we’ll certainly speak to every agent for a lot of free agents and see if there’s a fit, see if there’s players that want to come to Philly and if there’s the right fit for our club.”
