Tyler Seguin, centre

The Dallas Stars recently started contract negotiations with superstar centre Tyler Seguin this past week, as TFP Editor-in-Chief David Pagnotta first reported.

While contract talks remain in the early stages, according to Pagnotta, those discussions could escalate later this week.

Seguin, 26, has one-year remaining on his contract that comes with a $5.75 million salary cap hit – though he’ll make $6.5 million in actual salary this coming season.

It’s unclear what type of dollars Seguin is looking for, though it would most certainly be no less than the $9.5 million Stars captain Jamie Benn is making, on average, per season.

According to a source close to the team, the Stars have made it a priority to get Seguin locked up to an eight-year contract and would like to get a deal ironed out by the start of July.

The Stars are also set to meet with John Tavares’ group to try and lure him to Dallas, and TFP has learned Tavares’ decision, should be chose to sign with the Stars, will not affect the team’s ability to sign Seguin to a new deal.

In 82 games with the Stars this past season, Seguin registered a career-high 40 goals, along with 38 assists, for 78 points
