Nikita Zaitsev, defenceman

The Ottawa Senators have officially acquired defenceman Nikita Zaitsev, right wing Connor Brown and left wing Michael Carcone from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenceman Cody Ceci, defenceman Ben Harpur, centre Aaron Luchuk and a 2020 third-round draft pick, via Columbus.

The two sides agreed on the trade this past week, but waiting until the Maple Leafs paid out Zaitsev’s $3 million bonus earlier today before making the trade.

“We’re bringing in two highly competitive players that we like as long-term fits for our team. Both are the type of true professionals who match with the culture we want to put in place here in Ottawa,” said Senators GM Pierre Dorion. "Nikita is a physical right-shot defenceman who defends hard, fills lanes and blocks shots. Connor has scored 20 goals in the league and is excellent on the forecheck and the penalty kill. We feel both players will add to our depth and fit well within the structure we want our team to play.”

Zaitsev, 27, scored three goals and added 11 assists for 14 points with the Maple Leafs last season. The Moscow native has played in three NHL seasons, scoring 12 goals and adding 51 assists for 63 points in 223 games.

Brown, 25, scored eight goals and added 21 assists for 29 points in all 82 games for Toronto for the third consecutive season. The Toronto native has played in 253 career NHL games, all with the Leafs, scoring 43 goals and adding 56 assists for 99 points.

Carcone, an undrafted free agent, skated in 62 AHL games last season and set career highs in goals (20), assists (24) and points (44).

Ceci, 25, played in 74 games with Ottawa this season, registering seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points.

In 440 career NHL regular-season games over six seasons with the Senators, Ceci registered 32 goals and 86 assists for 118 points.

Harpur, 24, tallied one goal and four assists in 51 games with the Senators last season. He's played in 103 career NHL regular-season games and has accumulated one goal, six assists and 79 penalty minutes.

Luchuk, 22, recorded four goals and five assists in 27 games with the Belleville Senators of the AHL last season.
