The Carolina Hurricanes have officially matched star centre Sebastian Aho’s five-year, $42.27 million offer sheet with the Montreal Canadiens.

On July 1, the Canadiens signed Aho to the offer sheet, upon which the Hurricanes announced their intentions to match the deal the next day. Carolina had seven days to officially match the deal.

Had the Hurricanes declined to match the offer, they would have received a first-round draft pick, a second-round pick and a third-round pick as compensation from Montreal.

Aho, 21, registered 30 goals and 53 assists for 83 points in 82 games with the Hurricanes this past season.

In 242 career NHL regular-season games, Aho has accumulated 83 goals and 114 assists for 197 points.

The Hurricanes drafted Aho in the second-round, 35th overall, of the 2015 NHL Draft.
