Dion Phaneuf, defenceman

Dion Phaneuf’s name is starting to surface more and more as it relates trade chatter around the NHL, and there may be a good chance he’s dealt before the Feb. 26 trade deadline.

Phaneuf, 32, has three-years left on his contract, which comes with a $7 million salary cap – though his salary drops to $6.5 million in each of the next two seasons, and $5 million in 2020-21.

He also owns a 12-team trade list, which gives him some say in where he might end up.

According to Sporstnet’s Elliotte Friedman, “it’s safe to assume Ottawa’s spoken to” each of those 12 teams, thus far.

The Senators are believed to be looking to shed some salary prior to the deadline, and getting rid of Phaneuf’s salary would certainly help, though the Sens may have to take on some of his salary or take back a high-priced contract in return.

It’s unclear which teams currently have interest in Phaneuf, though the Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars have expressed interest in the past, including when he was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In 40 games with the Senators so far this season, Phaneuf has registered three goals and 10 assists for 13 points.
