Quinn Hughes, defenceman

Whether the Vancouver Canucks are active between now and the Feb. 25 trade deadline remains unclear, but one thing appears to be certain, they’ll be adding a potential star to their roster next month.

According to TFP Editor-in-Chief David Pagnotta, 2018 seventh-overall selection Quinn Hughes will be joining the Canucks after his season with the University of Michigan comes to an end.

The Canucks and Hughes will have to iron out the parameters of his entry-level contract once his NCAA season concludes, upon which he’ll make his way to Vancouver, sources have told Pagnotta. Michigan’s final regular-season game is on March 2 and the 2019 Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Tournament runs until March 23, if Michigan gets to the championship game.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Hughes seemed eager to join the Canucks’ young core, led by rookie sensation Elias Pettersen and young stars Brock Boeser, Jake Virtanen and Bo Horvat.

“I’ll just do what I’m good at and hopefully that helps all of them out,” he told SI. “I’m sure they’ll make me a better player, too, because I know how skilled and smart they are. Hopefully we can just complement each other.”

The 19-year-old defenceman has registered four goals and 25 assists for 29 points in 26 games so far this season with the Wolverines.
