VANEK TRADE LIKELY AS CONTRACT TALKS NONEXISTENT
Thomas Vanek, forward
The chances the Vancouver Canucks trade Thomas Vanek by Monday’s 3pm ET trade deadline seem strong, as the team has yet to engage in contract discussions with the veteran winger.
Steve Bartlett, Vanek’s agent, confirmed to TFP on Saturday that they “have not discussed a contract at this point.”
Vanek, 34, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent July 1 and seems like a good candidate to be moved to a playoff contender. It’s unclear what the Canucks are specifically asking for in exchange for Vanek, though a high draft pick and prospect are likely.
The St. Louis Blues, New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins and Columbus Blue Jackets are among the teams rumoured to have interest in Vanek, who has a $2 million salary cap hit.
Vanek has enjoyed his time in Vancouver and could revisit the possibility of signing back with the Canucks in July if he’s dealt in the next two days.
In 61 games with the Canucks so far this season, Vanek has registered 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points. He's on pace for his highest point total (55) since he registered 61 points with the Buffalo Sabres in 2011-12.
Vanek ranks #8 on TFP's Top 30 Available Players List.
