PHANEUF CONTRACT TOO PRICEY FOR MOST

If the Ottawa Senators can find a new home for defenceman Dion Phaneuf, the belief around the NHL is they would pull the trigger on a trade.

However, Phaneuf’s large contract – three more years at a $7 million annual salary cap hit – has posed a problem, despite past interest from teams like the Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars.

Senators GM Pierre Dorion appears more than willing to trade Phaneuf, but he’s been unable to find a deal that works, and the team may not overly interested in retaining a large portion of his salary to facilitate a trade.

Without financial assistance from the Senators, a deal involving Phaneuf may be unlikely ahead of the Feb. 26 trade deadline. Phaneuf also owns a 12-team trade list.

The Sens continue to entertain calls for a number of their players, in addition to Phaneuf, and winger Mike Hoffman has generated the most interest.

The Calgary Flames are believed to be extremely interested in Hoffman, and may be willing to package top goaltending prospect Jon Gillies with another young asset for Hoffman.

Phaneuf currently ranks No.14 on TFP's Top 30 Available Players List.
