George McPhee, GM

The Vegas Golden Knights are among the teams looking to buy over these next few days, but they might be more focused on adding a player with term on his contract.

Golden Knights GM George McPhee is exploring the marketplace and weighing his options, and seems to be zeroing in on players signed beyond this season.

The Knights have been expressed interest in Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson, though one league source told TFP that was an “exploratory call” and it’s unclear if talks get serious by Monday’s 3pm ET trade deadline – they could, however, set the stage for an off-season move.

On defence, McPhee is also believed to have interest in New York Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh and Detroit Red Wings defenceman Mike Green, who is in the final year of his contract.

Green can become an unrestricted free agent July 1, but with the Knights lack of a true top-pair defenceman, he could be an option if the price tag drops.

The Golden Knights, who are likely reluctant to trade their first-round draft pick, have also been linked to Ottawa Senators forwards Derick Brassard and Zack Smith, and Rangers right wing Mats Zuccarello.

Meanwhile, TFP Editor-in-Chief David Pagnotta reported on Thursday via Twitter that there has been no progress to report in contract discussions between the Knights and sniper James Neal.

Neal, 30, is in the final-year of a six-year, $30 million contract and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

There appears to be mutual interest in coming to terms on a contract extension, but it appears those talks will be pushed until later in the season.
