Speculation ran wild on Friday after a local Edmonton report claimed the Oilers were zeroing in on a trade for Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry.
On Saturday, on both “The Hot Stove” on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio and “Hello Hockey” on Edmonton Sports Talk, TFP’s David Pagnotta reported a trade between the Penguins and Oilers is not considered imminent.
Pagnotta did, however, confirm the Oilers have spoken with the Penguins about Jarry, who has two more years remaining on his contract after this season and comes with a $5.375 million salary cap hit.
During “Saturday Headlines” on Hockey Night in Canada, Elliotte Friedman echoed what Pagnotta stated earlier in the day and further reported that the Oilers want to keep Stuart Skinner and platoon him with Jarry, if a deal were to be worked out.
“I do think there’s legitimate Edmonton interest in Jarry, but I think it is extremely complicated, and might not be possible, mainly because Pittsburgh has indicated it will not retain,” Friedman said.
“It might not be possible because Edmonton would have to do some roster surgery to get it done, and right now, because of their own injury and cap situation, they are really stuck. I believe there’s interest in Jarry, and I just don’t know it’s going to be possible.”
With no salary cap space available to play with, the Oilers would need to effectively clear out Jarry’s full cap hit in order to acquire him, and that is the evident sticking point to upgrading between the pipes.
The Oilers have also been linked to Laurent Brossoit, whom the Chicago Blackhawks are looking to trade, but Edmonton would need the Oilers to retain likely half of his $3.3 million cap hit in order to help facilitate a trade.
