It is no secret the New Jersey Devils have interest in Vancouver Canucks star defenceman Quinn Hughes, but it hasn’t been clear whether or not the two teams have had any legitimate conversations about a possible trade ... until today.

During “Saturday Headlines” on Hockey Night in Canada, Elliotte Friedman reported the Devils spoke with the Canucks about Hughes after the team sent out a recent memo informing teams they are open to listening on select veteran players.

Friedman stressed a trade is not imminent, but the two clubs have indeed discussed Hughes, whose brothers Jack and Luke play for the Devils.

The belief is the Canucks do not plan on trading Hughes this right now or in the season, a message relayed by TFP’s David Pagnotta while on NHL Network on Friday.

Pagnotta also reported the Devils are exploring the forward market and have shown interest in some members of the Nashville Predators, including Steven Stamkos, Ryan O’Reilly and Jonathan Marchessault.

The Devils are among the teams that have also expressed interest in Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota Wild, Dallas Stars and Philadelphia Flyers are also among the teams eyeing Sherwood.
