The Buffalo Sabres are expected to be very active this off-season, as the club is expected to make a number of roster changes to retool for the 2019-20 campaign.

In his latest “31 Thoughts” column on Sportsnet.ca, Elliotte Friedman reported the Sabres will make several moves this summer and “it seems certain that roster surgery is coming.”

The Sabres have two major free agents on the roster in Jeff Skinner and Jason Pominville – it’s believed the team will not look to re-sign Pominville, while they’d still like to get Skinner locked up.

With at least $22.5 million in available salary cap space going into next season – and that figure will increase once the 2019-20 salary cap increases – the Sabres will have flexibility this summer in reshaping their roster.

It’s unclear whom Sabres GM Jason Botterill plans on shopping in the trade market, though forward Vladimir Sobotka and defencemen Marco Scandella and Matt Hunwick could be on the move.

Friedman also suggested a coaching change may not be at the top of the team’s to-do list, though left the possibility open should Botterill go that route.
