BOUCHER TO MEET SENS MANAGEMENT MONDAY
Ottawa Senators head coach Guy Boucher will sit down with GM Pierre Dorion on Monday to discuss his future with the organization.
Dorion confirmed the meeting to the media on Saturday night following the NHL Draft Lottery, where the Senators were awarded the fourth-overall selection.
Boucher’s future with the club is up in the air, as management may decide to make a change based on how the meeting goes.
Dorion wants to see Boucher utilize the team’s younger talent more and Boucher will have to shift his coaching style slightly if he wants to return.
“Guy’s a great coach and he’s become a friend over the last two years,” said Dorion as quoted by the Ottawa Sun. “At the same time, last year we made a lot of decisions right after the season on players, and personnel decisions, and this year we felt we were going to evaluate everyone from top-to-bottom.
“We just wanted a few weeks to look it over and think things through. We’re going to meet with Guy Monday and from there we’re going to see if we can find ways to improve next season and then we’ll make a decision after that.”
If Boucher sticks around, the Sun suggests the team could alter parts of his coaching staff.
Boucher’s future is merely one part of a long list of things the Senators plan on dealing with this off-season, as roster moves are expected over the next two months and the future of captain Erik Karlsson ranks atop the list of items the team needs clarity on.
Karlsson, who has one-year left on his contract, and the Senators are expected to speak in advance of the NHL Draft about his future with the organization. While the two sides cannot officially sign an extension until July 1, they can discuss options and if it becomes clear that a deal is not likely, the Senators must look to move him, and that could happen at the NHL Draft, despite Dorion previously stating a trade at that point is unlikely.
