Detroit team named the 'Gladiators'

The World Hockey Association's Detroit franchise shall now be know as the Gladiators.

The new WHA franchise announced the name on Wednesday, which was picked by hockey fans during a week of online voting.

The Gladiators received 32 percent of the votes, while other finalists were the Cougars (28 percent), Demons (19 percent), Speed (13 percent) and Dynamos (8 percent).

The team also unveiled its logo, which features a gladiator with a hockey stick and shield.

Senticore Inc., a public holding company based in Hollywood, Fla., last month announced its purchase of the Detroit franchise.

The Gladiators will begin their inaugural season (38 home games) in October at a newly installed ice arena in the Silverdome.
