Top 25 Available Players
As of Feb. 22, 2012 :: 9:10pm ET
With the NHL trade deadline quickly approaching (Feb.
27, 2012), TFP has outlined 25 of the top names
rumored to be available for trade through various
newspapers, radio and television reports, cyberspace
and our own league-wide sources. Last season, 17 of
the 25 players listed were traded.
As part of TFP's Trade Deadline Coverage, this page will be updated regularly and TFP's Panel of Experts will outline the values of each
athlete. As the days inch closer to the deadline, some
players may climb or fall off the list, while others
may be added. Teams reportedly showing interest will
also be added and adjusted as more information becomes
available.
Nash's sudden "availability" comes with several key
conditions. He owns a NMC and will dictate where he'll
end up, if anywhere. A trade isn't guaranteed. There
are only a select amount of teams the Blue Jackets can
and are speaking with. Columbus, first and foremost,
wants a top line player, as well as a 2nd liner or top
2 defenseman. A stud goalie could also be intriguing.

2
Bobby Ryan, RW
Cap Hit: $5.1 million | Age:
24
The Ducks prefer to keep Ryan long-term, and
unless an offer comes across GM Bob Murray's table
that knocks his socks off, Ryan isn't going anywhere.
Ryan is the club's most valuable tradable asset, and
help on the blueline is priority No.1 for this team,
but that doesn't mean a trade will occur.

3
Ales Hemsky, RW
Cap Hit: $4.1 million | Age:
28
There's a lot of uncertainty about Hemsky's future in
Edmonton, mainly because it's believed his preference
is to test the free agent waters this summer.
The Oilers almost traded Hemsky at last year's
deadline and will likely pull the trigger on a deal
this time around.

4
Jeff Carter, C
Cap Hit: $5.272 million | Age:
27
Okay, so the experiment in Columbus hasn't exactly
panned out the way the Blue Jackets had hoped.
It now looks like Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson is
willing to move on, though it will be difficult for
him to acquire the same package he originally gave up
for Carter.
Not yet traded
5
Lubomir Visnovsky, D
Cap Hit: $5.6 million | Age:
35
The most prized and most available defenseman appears
to be Anaheim's Lubo Visnovsky, who has a no-movement
clause and will need to sign off on any deal that's
completed.
Visnovsky, however, has another year left on his
contract, which should increase his value.

6
Derek Roy, C
Cap Hit:
$4 million | Age: 28
The talk surrounding a possible Derek Roy trade keeps
getting louder with each passing day, it seems.
Historically, Sabres GM Darcy Regier isn't overly
active on deadline day, but he could look to shake
things up a little bit in the weeks leading up to
D-Day and move Roy.
Not yet traded
7
Ryan Suter, D
Cap Hit:
$3.5 million | Age: 26
Suter can walk as an unrestricted free
agent July 1 if he isn't signed to a new deal.
However, like teammate Shea Weber, the Predators aren't itching to
trade him.
The Predators want to make the playoffs and moving
Suter might hurt their chances. If he stays, they
could deal his rights in the off-season, which might
be likely.
Not yet traded
8
Tuomo Ruutu, LW
Cap Hit: $3.8 million | Age:
28
Ruutu is expected to be moved before the deadline if
he can't agree to an extension with the Hurricanes,
but his recently injury could keep him in Carolina. A
number of Cup contenders are looking for some extra
scoring.
The native of Vantaa, Finland, is on pace for a
career-high in goals and that is driving his price tag
up.
You've got to give something to get something, and
right now van Riemsdyk is Philadelphia's most
attractive, expendable forward.
The Flyers want a star in the back end and he's the
best bait they've got, though the additions of
Grossman and Kubina could hold off a deal.
Not yet traded
10
Mike Ribeiro, C
Cap Hit:
$5 million | Age: 32
For the second straight trade deadline season, Mike
Ribeiro finds himself available and tossed around the
rumor mill.
He has one-year left on his contract, beyond this
season, and could be moved if the Stars can get their
hands on a young forward with top-six potential.
Not yet traded
11
Pavel Kubina, D
Cap Hit:
$3.85 million | Age: 34
It seems like it's only a matter of time before Tampa
Bay trades Kubina. He was asked to submit a list of
teams he'd accept a trade to, and several Cup
contenders would love to add him to their roster.
The Lightning isn't entirely throwing in the towel,
but they're being realistic about their season.
The Andrei Kostitsyn experiment in Montreal should be
over in a matter of months, it seems, whether he's traded at the
deadline or not. He's a UFA this summer and it doesn't
sound like the Habs will bring him back.
Kostitsyn can supply some extra secondary scoring to a
team looking to make a run.

13
Jack Johnson, D
Cap Hit:
$4.357 million | Age: 24
The Kings aren't actively shopping Johnson, but
they'll recently considered trading him for a top-line scorer, if
the opportunity presents itself.
Johnson's in the first year of a seven-year contract and
his cap hit is very reasonable, even though he's not
produced as expected this season.
Not yet traded
14
Paul Stastny, C/RW
Cap Hit: $6.6 million | Age:
26
Stastny's name continues to swirl around the rumor
mill, even with his high price tag.
The Avalanche isn't interested in selling him off. If
Colorado trades him, they'll want to swap him out for
a top-tier player as the centerpiece of a large
package.
Not yet traded
15
Jonathan
Bernier, G
Cap Hit: $1.25 million | Age:
23
The Kings are on the fence about trading Bernier this
soon, as he's their insurance policy if the club can't
get Jonathan Quick locked into a long-term contract
next year.
That said, though, GM Dean Lombardi wants a top-line
winger and Bernier's quite valuable.
Not yet traded
16
Hal Gill, D
Cap Hit: $2.25 million | Age:
36
Gill has played a vital role in the development of the
Canadiens' younger defensemen, but his tenure in
Montreal might be coming to an end.
The 36-year-old can become an unrestricted free agent
this summer and might not be brought back. He'd be a
welcomed addition to any Stanley Cup contender.
Leafs GM Brian Burke told TFP he is not actively shopping Schenn, and while that may be
true, he isn't telling his counterparts that the young
defenseman is unavailable, either.
Schenn is a big asset for Toronto, and if an offer
comes in that knocks Burke's socks off, he'll do it.
Not yet traded
18
Johnny Oduya, D
Cap Hit: $3.5 million | Age: 30
There are a lot of whispers surrounding the future of
Oduya in Winnipeg. The Jets might be more inclined to
trade him for some quality draft picks, as he's set to
become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
The Jets aren't in a selling mode, given their playoff
race, but Oduya could still be on the move.
Not yet traded
19
Antoine Vermette, C/LW
Cap Hit:
$3.75 million | Age: 29
Vermette has been on the trade block for a good
portion of the season, much like Derick Brassard used
to be.
The Blue Jackets want to deal him, but his salary and
poor production isn't generating an enticing-enough
return for GM Scott Howson to pull the trigger.
Malone's name has been circulating the rumor mill
lately, though he'll have the final say on any deal
Tampa tries to make, as he possesses a no-movement
clause.
Whether he's willing to sign off on a deal or not
remains to be seen, but it appears he's being dangled
for help in goal or on the blueline.
Not yet traded
21
Travis Moen, LW/RW
Cap Hit: $1.5 million | Age:
29
The Canadiens prefer to keep Moen and sign him to
an extension, as he's been one of the few bright spots
on their roster, given his capabilities.
Moen is only 29 and offers a gritty presence that
contenders drool over.
Not yet traded
22
Paul Gaustad, C
Cap Hit:
$2.3 million | Age: 30
There are plenty of teams interested in getting their
hands on a gritty, hard-nosed center like Gaustad.
The 30-year-old is scheduled to become an unrestricted
free agent this summer and the Sabres could get a
decent return before the trade deadline.
Not yet traded
23
Bryan Allen, D
Cap Hit:
$2.9 million | Age: 31
Allen is one of three defensemen the Hurricanes are
dangling as trade bait, including Joni Pitkanen and
Jaroslav Spacek.
He's a UFA at the end of the season and his strong
play in his own zone would be very valuable for Cup
contenders.
Not yet traded
24
Nicklas Grossman, D
Cap Hit:
$1.625 million | Age: 27
It's starting to look more and more likely that the
Stars are going to start dealing some of their players
as they build for next season.
Grossman is set to become an unrestricted free agent
this summer and the Stars could trade him for some
youth and/or draft picks.
As if the list of available Columbus players wasn't
long enough, Pahlsson is another Blue Jacket in the
mix.
He's set to become a UFA this summer and isn't likely
to return. The Blue Jackets want to shed some salary
and Pahlsson's two-way play would be a nice addition
for a Cup contender.

Teams Reportedly Showing Interest
Status
7
Derick
Brassard, C
Cap Hit:
$3.2 million | Age: 24
A coaching change in Columbus has eased the
relationship between the team and Brassard. The Blue Jackets
were
trying to deal him, and almost traded
him to Ottawa in Dec., but he seems to be off the
market.
Brassard's salary was minor concern for some teams, as
he'd command a top young stud & a high draft
pick.
Not yet traded
7
Francois Beauchemin, D
Cap Hit: $3.8 million | Age:
31
If the Ducks can't make any ground on a playoff spot,
Beauchemin could be dealt for a nice turn. The
31-year-old could be among the top-available defensemen
leading up to the deadline and will be costly.
Beauchemin owns a limited no-trade clause, though, and
might have to sign off on a move.
Re-signed with Anaheim
9
Shea Weber, D
Cap Hit: $7.5 million | Age:
26
The Predators have made it clear that they're not trading
Weber this season. He'll become a restricted free agent this
summer and they can retain his rights. Even if they
get the feeling they won't sign him long-term, they
can look to move him in the summer. Regardless, it will take a
giant package in order to pry Weber out of Nashville.
Not yet traded
14
Sam Gagner, C/RW
Cap Hit:
$2.275 million | Age: 22
Gagner's been dangled for a good portion of the
season, as the Oilers are looking for a young
defenseman to help solidify their blueline.
It's uncertain if the Oilers want to move Gagner
before the trade deadline, or at the NHL Entry Draft,
mainly because he's woken up big time for the club.
Not yet traded
14
Vinny Prospal, LW
Cap Hit:
$2.5 million | Age: 36
Veteran forward Vinny Prospal continues to perform
well in almost any atmosphere, and that could lead to
a solid return for Columbus if the Blue Jackets decide
to trade him before the deadline.
Prospal's a proven winner and should commend a nice
package for the Blue Jackets.
Re-signed with Columbus
15
Tim Gleason, D
Cap Hit: $2.75
million | Age: 28
There aren't that many steady defenseman available, at
the moment, and that could give the Hurricanes a
slight edge heading into this year's trade deadline.
Gleason isn't likely to be back in Raleigh next year.
It's believed the Hurricanes will deal him before Feb.
27.
Re-signed with Carolina
15
Ray Whitney, LW
Cap Hit: $3 million | Age:
39
As long as the Coyotes are in the playoff race,
they're not going to consider moving their top scorer, Ray Whitney.
Whitney is in the last year of his current contract
and can become a UFA this summer. If a great offer
comes Phoenix's way, they might consider it.
Not yet traded
21
Kristian Huselius, LW
Cap Hit:
$4.75 million | Age: 33
His recent trouble with the injury bug might prevent a
deal from transpiring, but he's a strong top-six
scorer when healthy. The problem is, he might be shut
down for the season.
It's too early to tell if Columbus will want him back
next season, as he's in the final year of his current
contract.
Not yet traded
23
Alexander Semin,
RW
Cap Hit:
$6.7 million | Age: 27
Trading Semin, as we've documented in the past, is
difficult for the Capitals for a number of reasons.
His salary is the biggest issue, though, and that
could result in teams offering a lesser package for
him.
It's believed Semin will test the waters this summer
as a UFA, which is also of concern for some teams.
Not yet traded
23
Sergei Gonchar,
D
Cap
Hit: $5.5 million | Age: 37
Even though the Senators are in the thick of things in
Eastern Conference, they wouldn't mind unloading
Gonchar and his hefty salary.
Gonchar has one-year left on his deal beyond this
season, but also owns a no-movement clause. He'll have
the final say if the Sens can find a taker.
Not yet traded
25
Josh Harding, G
Cap
Hit: $750,000 | Age: 27
Harding's in the final year of his contract and can
become an unrestricted free agent July 1. He's likely
to test the market if he isn't traded by then, as he
wants the opportunity to be a No.1 goalie in the NHL.
Minnesota is looking for depth on the wings and could
flip Harding for a veteran forward.
