A courageous outing
By David Pagnotta, TheFourthPeriod.com

Despite all the technological advances, broken barriers and huge steps forward people have taken in today's society, the open topic of homosexuality remains a very sketchy subject.

Why? I'm not too sure.

I mean, I get it. I understand why some people are uncomfortable speaking about it. But you'd think that with everything that has gone over in recent years, it wouldn't be such a huge headliner.

But, I'm wrong. (Obviously, considering I'm writing about it)

In an excellent read by ESPN's John Buccigross, the son of a high-powered NHL figurehead goes into detail on coming out of the closet while being very much involved in hockey.

Really, it shouldn't matter. And the players on the team he student manages, Miami University, could care less.

Brian BurkeBut there are many people out there who wouldn't be caught dead with a gay man working alongside them in a male-dominated sports world.

"There are gay men in professional hockey. We would be fools to think otherwise. And it's sad that they feel the need to conceal this," Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke told ESPN.

"Can a gay man advance in professional hockey? He can if he works for the Toronto Maple Leafs! Or for Miami University Hockey."

You see, Burke's son, Brendan, is gay. He knew back in middle school. He had to battle the challenges of relaying that message to his family and friends, and if you've never been put in that position, I'm sure it can be quite the ordeal.

But his family loves him, his friends don't seem to care, his coach doesn't care and Miami University is glad he's part of the team.

It shouldn't be the end of the world. People are straight, people are gay. Does it really matter who's who?

Check out Buccigross' piece on ESPN for the full story.
