The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Tom Gilbert from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a 2017 conditional fifth-round draft pick.
The Kings are also retaining 20 percent of Gilbert's remaining salary.
If the Capitals win two or more playoff rounds this spring and Gilbert plays in at least half of those games, the Capitals will send a fifth-round pick to the Kings. If not, the Kings will not receive anything as part of this trade.
Gilbert, 34, appeared in 18 games this season with the Kings, recording five points (one goal, four assists) and six penalty minutes. He was signed by the Kings as an unrestricted free agent, July 1, 2016.
He has played 655 career NHL regular-season games, to date, with the Montreal Canadiens, Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Edmonton Oilers and Kings, and has accumulate 45 goals and 178 assists for 223 points, and 198 penalty minutes.
Gilbert was originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the fourth-round, 129th overall, of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
