Ovechkin, 28, was taken to the hospital in an ambulance for further evaluation.
Citing "inside info," Russian sports reporter Slava Malamud of Sport-Express claimed the injury was "pretty bad."
But upon his return to the hotel from the hospital, where an MRI was taken, Ovechkin was walking on his own. According to Malamud, Ovechkin was limping, but was not on crutches.
The Russian team doctor told Malamud the injury is "better than expected," but a final diagnosis has not yet been determined.
Ovechkin later posted a picture of himself on Instagram giving a thumbs-up and wrote, "Everything's OK! Congrats on the win, everybody!"
Ovechkin picked up 51 goals and 28 assists for 79 points in 78 games with the Capitals this season.
Last season's MVP captured his fourth Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy this season for leading the NHL in goals.
