The Capitals will be fairly active in the free agent market, but GM George McPhee plans on proceeding with caution, the Washington Post reported on its website.
"We'll be involved but I don't expect to do a whole lot," McPhee told the Post. "We're in a great position right now where we have a good team. So rather than getting seduced into signing three- or four-year deals, we believe we have young people who are ready to go."
Various reports have linked the Capitals to defenseman Anton Volchenkov, while the Post suggests the team's biggest need is a second-line center. The Post lists Saku Koivu and Matt Cullen as possible options for the Capitals.
Meanwhile, goalie Jose Theodore will not be back next season, as McPhee told the Post Semyon Varlamov and Michal Neuvirth will be the team's netminders next season.
"We're going with our young goaltenders," he said. "They're both 22 years old now and they've got a couple of years of pro under their belts. Varly's played two years at the NHL level and Neuvirth has won two Calder Cups and got an MVP. They're blue-chip prospects. It could become a real strength of our team and our organization."
