Capitals almost acquired Khabibulin

In the early part of last season, the Chicago Blackhawks almost traded goalie Nikolai Khabibulin to the Washington Capitals.

According to the New York Post, Hawks GM Dale Tallon, who was recently replaced, had agreed to send Khabibulin to the Capitals for center Michael Nylander in late-November or early-December.

The trade, however, was vetoed by Blackhawks president John McDonough.

At the time, it was reported by various media outlets, including TSN and TFP, that the Capitals had agreed to send Nylander to Chicago, but the return was unconfirmed.

Capitals GM George McPhee was apparently livid the Hawks backed out of the deal, as Nylander was not often used during the season and playoffs.

The Post suggests deal Tallon agreed to make put him in McDonough's bad books and was one of the reasons he was fired earlier this month.

Khabibulin played a vital roll in Chicago's success in 2008-09.
