According to the Washington Times, Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner may be left out of the roster due to salary cap issues.
Alzner has played 19 games with the Caps this season, and has seen his playing time increases due to injuries on the team's blueline.
With players on long-term injured reserve, the Capitas were able to accommodate Alzner's salary, but with players soon to make their return, such as Sergei Federov and Tom Poti, his salary may be the reason that he will not be able to play.
"I've thought about it the last few days," Alzner told the Times. "I am nervous every time I come to the rink because I know my time could be dwindling here. I'm still hoping something can get done because although Hershey [of the AHL] is fun, I'd much rather be here."
Alzner can make up to $1.675 million this season with bonuses, but with limited cap space, the Caps may have to make a trade or put a player on waivers to keep Alzner on the team when injured players return.
The Capitals have been trying to unload center Michael Nylander and his $4.875 million salary.
