Capitals would like Huet locked up

By David Pagnotta, Editor-in-Chief -- TheFourthPeriod.com

The Washington Capitals would like to get Cristobal Huet signed to a multi-year contract, but the 32-year-old goalie may field offers from other teams once the free agent market opens at noon ET.

The two sides are believed to be discussing a three-year contract, and while various media outlets suggest they're close, Huet's agent, Stephen Bartlett, told TFP late Monday that "there's nothing to report," adding that a deal has not been agreed upon.

"Negotiations are ongoing," he said.

Huet, who was acquired by the Capitals from the Montreal Canadiens on trade deadline day, could command upwards of $5 million per season.

Sources tell TFP that Capitals GM George McPhee would like to get a deal done before the floodgates open.

Meanwhile, the Capitals continue to have discussions with Mike Green's agent, Don Meehan.

As of earlier today, a deal was not believed to be close, and it's possible another team could swoop in a sign Green to an offer sheet. If that happens, however, it's believed the Capitals will match.

Green, 22, is believed to be looking for more than $4.5 million per season.

The Capitals would also like to get unrestricted free agent center Sergei Fedorov inked to a new one-year agreement.

Fedorov is expected to field offers from other clubs on Tuesday, although there's a good chance he signs with Washington.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

- The Edmonton Oilers are entertaining offers for restricted free agent defenseman Joni Pitkanen. The club's acquisition of Lubomir Visnovsky just about spells the end of Pitkanen's time in Edmonton.

There's a chance a team tries to sign him to an offer sheet, and the Oilers might let him walk if the price tag is too high.

- Defenseman Wade Redden is willing to see what every team interested in him has to offer. The Carolina Hurricanes, Atlanta Thrashers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Phoenix Coyotes are all believed to be interested in his services.

"Wade will be open to anybody expressing interest and will consider all offers," his agent, Don Meehan, told TFP.

- The Red Wings are close to re-signing Chris Chelios, while there are question marks surrounding fellow defenseman Brad Stuart. If Stuart isn't signed by noon Tuesday, he won't be returning to Detroit.

- The Leafs are expected to pitch an offer to Curtis Joseph to become the club's new backup.
