Green looking for big raise By David Pagnotta, Editor-in-Chief -- TheFourthPeriod.com
Negotiations between the Washington Capitals and restricted free agent defenseman Mike Green are ongoing, but there doesn't appear to have been any progress made over the past few days.
"We are currently negotiating with the Capitals," Green's agent, Don Meehan of Newport Sports, wrote in an e-mail. "It is too early to say at this time whether we will be successful in negotiating an agreement."
The two sides continue to discuss a long-term extension. Green is looking for at least $4.5 million per season.
Referencing Shea Weber's three-year, $13.5 million contract, player agent and Newport representative Mark Guy confirmed that such an annual salary would be a starting point for Green.
If Green goes unsigned by tomorrow, there is a chance another team may convince him to sign an offer sheet.
(Correction: In a news story dated June 29, 2008, TFP noted that Green was "believed to be looking for around $3.5 million to $4 million per season." Those figures were incorrectly stated and should have read $4.5 million to $5 million per season. We apologize for the misprint.)
