Canucks sign top pick Virtanen

The Vancouver Canucks have signed first-round draft pick forward Jake Virtanen to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Virtanen, 17, collected 45 goals and 26 assists for 71 points, along with 100 penalty minutes, last season with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League.

The native of Abbotsford, B.C., won gold with Canada at the 2013 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and bronze at the 2014 Under-18 World Championship in Finland.

Virtanen was selected sixth-overall by the Canucks in the 2014 NHL Draft.
