Canucks close to hiring Benning as GM

The Vancouver Canucks appear to have found their next General Manager and are expected to formally introduce him to the position later this week.

The Canucks have been chatting with Boston Bruins Assistant GM Jim Benning about taking over as their new GM.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, Benning is expected to be named the Canucks GM this week.

Once Benning is brought in, he's expected to expedite the team's search for a new head coach. Dreger reports former Nashville Predators bench boss Barry Trotz is high on Vancouver's wish list.

Benning was named to the Bruins' Assistant GM on July 14, 2007, and first joined the organization in July 2006 as the team's Director of Player Personnel.
