Talk shifts to Schneider's future

TheFourthPeriod.com

With Roberto Luongo locked up to a new 12-year contract, the focus surrounding the Canucks shifts to young netminder Cory Schneider.

Schneider was considered the Canucks' goalie of the future, but with Luongo sticking around for the long-haul, it appears Schneider's tenure in B.C. is coming to an end.

According to the Vancouver Province, if Schneider makes the team out of training camp, the Canucks could showcase him to other clubs and eventually trade him.

However, the paper also notes that with the Canucks signing Andrew Raycroft to serve as the team's backup goalie, Schneider could spend the year in the AHL and end up being traded closer to the trade deadline.

Canucks GM Mike Gillis, meanwhile, isn't in a rush to pull the trigger on a deal.

"There is no pressure [to make a trade]," Gillis told the Vancouver Sun. "None. Cory is going to have every opportunity to make this team. That's what he's been told. He is a great young player for us and what happens with another player doesn't necessarily affect him at this point in time."
